Next generation HIV vaccines and intradermal vaccination

HIV remains a major global public health issue, having claimed an estimated 44.1 million lives to date (1). Despite decades of research, no effective HIV vaccine exist. It is well known that the route of administration (subcutaneous, intramuscular or intradermal) can substantially modify the response. As skin tissue contains a broad array of antigen-presenting cells (APCs), intradermal vaccination is a potentially superior vaccine delivery site (2).
