Rabies vaccination

Making Rabies vaccination more accessible, affordable and easy

Rabies remains a major public health challenge despite being preventable through vaccination. Expanding access to effective vaccination strategies is critical to achieving the WHO’s “Zero by 30” goal of eliminating human deaths from rabies.

Read more on how intradermal rabies vaccination can support cost-effective immunization of adults and children and resolve shortages.

Effective Rabies prevention with pre- and post-exposure vaccination

Rabies prevention is highly effective through either pre-exposure vaccination (PrEP) for individuals at high risk of exposure or post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) after a bite by an infected animal. Both approaches require rabies vaccination given through intramuscular or intradermal injection.

In certain exposure cases, PEP also requires the immediate administration of rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) for rapid protection.

Rabies vaccination: cost-effective, without compromising protection

Intradermal vaccination is considered a safe, immunogenic, and cost-effective alternative to traditional intramuscular vaccination for Rabies prevention. It helps maximize available vaccine doses while maintaining effective protection against rabies, supporting broader access to vaccination programs.

To support accurate intradermal delivery, Idevax developed VAX-ID, an intradermal injection adaptor designed for vaccine administration into the dermal layer of the skin.

Rabies immunization: offering a smarter and reliable approach

Limited vaccine availability and costs associated with traditional intramuscular administration limit access to rabies vaccination in many endemic regions as well as for travelers. Idevax offers a practical, dose-sparing solution that can help extend vaccine supply, reduce vaccination costs, and support broader access to life-saving rabies immunization programs.

Rabies vaccination made easy for healthcare professionals

The traditional Mantoux technique requires specialized training and can be difficult to perform consistently, creating a barrier to the wider adoption of intradermal rabies vaccination.

VAX-ID, our intradermal injection adaptor designed to simplify intradermal vaccine administration, overcomes these challenges. Its standardized design supports accurate and reliable vaccine delivery while helping improve the vaccination experience for both healthcare professionals and vaccinees.

Clinical evidence for Rabies vaccination with VAX-ID

A randomized clinical trial RABIDIMIQ in healthy adults by Soentjens et al. confirmed that VAX-ID elicited a serological response equivalent to that achieved with the traditional Mantoux technique.

Furthermore, in the RABIKID study, researchers at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Belgium, are investigating child-friendly intradermal rabies vaccination. A fractional-dose of the vaccine is given using VAX-ID to improve the vaccination experience while maintaining the benefits of skin-targeted immunization.

What do experts say about intradermal Rabies vaccination?

Recognizing these benefits, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends intradermal Rabies vaccination using a 2-dose schedule (Day 0 and Day 7) to improve vaccine accessibility.
